Review: Gary Sheffield HR 500 by Rocky Patel
Baseball season is now in full swing. The Mets are playing okay. The Yankees are playing well. And as expected, even in the American League, Houston is livings up to the nickname “Lastros”! Which makes this the perfect time to talk about the Gary Sheffield HR 500 from Rocky Patel. Named to celebrate Gary Sheffield‘s 500th home run (he actually hit 509 career HRs), the Tampa native teamed up with Rocky Patel to create this pleasing though not overly complex cigar. It is a good cigar for celebrating the victories of your favourite team. I enjoy one after watching a Mets win on TV or on returning from a Jupiter Hammerheads single-A game.
Upon lighting up the HR 500 there is an almost immediate burst of chocolate. The draw is near perfect, and it burns very evenly. The first third is dominated by chocolate and coffee notes. This is not a very complex cigar, but hints of leather and oak make the occasional appearance. Coffee, chocolate, oak and leather all mix together to create a pleasing experience during the final half of the cigar. Just a bit of pepper is there towards the end. Although there is very little change in the flavour of the cigar from start to finish, it still manages to be a pretty enjoyable smoke that is worth trying.
I would be remiss not to mention the impressive packaging of the HR 500. The box itself not only looks like a baseball, but feels just like one also. A gold medallion covers the center of the box. When opened there is a picture of Gary Sheffield hitting his 500th homerun (in his New York Mets uniform) on the inside lid. The felt lining on the inside gives the box a unique look. If you purchase a box at certain Rocky Patel events Gary Sheffield will personally sign your box. (Sometimes a poster, ball or bat also.) Few cigars are packaged is such a spectacular fashion.
There are several ways to go about pairing the Gary Sheffield HR 500 with a drink. I’ve found that Bowmore 12, Balvenie 14 Caribbean Cask, Macallan 18, Glenmorangie Lasanta and Caol Ila 12 all pair well with the HR 500. A nice aged sipping rum such as the Zafra 21 or Kirk & Sweeny 12 also goes great with this cigar. Because of the chocolate notes, a cappuccino or expresso is also a good choice for when you like a non-alcoholic pairing.
