Review: Zino Platinum Make of New York
Zino Platinum has been laying claim to the cigar smoking gentlemen of New York City, first with the Zino Toro X and now with the Zino Make of New York series. This cigar is as complex, intense, and unique as the New York that I grew up in. Not enough limited edition cigars manage to live up to the hype, but the Zino Make of New York has not, in my opinion, received nearly enough attention. It’s as if Zino-Davidoff was able to take the best parts of the Davidoff Millennium Blend, Zino Chubby Special Wrapper and Davidoff Puro D’Oro to create one very high quality limited edition. The Zino Make of New York is a very good cigar, but has all of the hallmarks of a cigar that will age quite well. This is definitely a cigar to add the the long-term collection. Personally, I feel this is the best Zino Platinum cigar yet.
From the start there is a pleasing sweet flavour that is hard to define. That sweetness soon turns to cedar and a hint of citrus. As the draw opens up flavours of leather, cedar, dried citrus and spice begin to dominate the first third of the cigar. The Zino Make of New York is a superbly constructed cigar that burns extremely even and holds a very long ash. During the middle of the cigar, the strength picks up to something bordering on full-bodied. As the cigar continues, the flavours mellow into leather, oak and clove. There is a slight tingle on the lips that is similar to that experienced when smoking a Davidoff Millennium Blend. This cigar does manage to capture the flavour of New York.
The packaging of the Zino Make of New York series was done by Mike Baca and Fernando Romero (@Ski_UR_NewYork) from UR New York. Like the Zino Toro X, they have created four different limited edition box designs that capture the essence of New York City. Only 750 sets of 4 boxes of 10 cigars have been released. Each cigar sports two bands the second band matches the theme of the box artwork, but the blend is the same for all four cigars. This can get quite confusing for both retailers and consumers. The Zino Flavor of New York, Spirit of New York, Pulse of New York and Thread of New York are all essentially the same cigar with different packaging.
When pairing the Zino Make of New York quality Speyside single-malt is the best choice. The Balvenie 17 DoubleWood, The Balvenie 21 PortWood, Cardu 12, Glenfarclas 25 and The Macallan 15 all pair quite well. For those who wish to stick with the New York theme, the Hudson Single Malt is also a very good choice. I personally like to pair this cigar with the Camus Ile de Ré Fine Island Double Matured Cognac. The Zino Make of New York is a cigar that pair well with a wide selection of beverages.
